The sea is not our natural place. We enter it as visitors, learning quickly that strength alone is not enough. Water resists us, carries us, knocks us down. At first, the human figure is little more than a shape within it.
Some have learned its language. They stand differently in the water. They read its movement and teach others how to do the same. Their place there has been earned through time, failure and repetition.
Others are only beginning. They wait for the wave, rise, balance for a moment, then fall. Again and again, the water reminds them of the difference between standing upon it and moving with it.
Eventually, something changes. Resistance becomes understanding. The body begins to follow the water rather than fight against it.
And at the end, the sea is no smaller. The figure is.
But this time, they are standing.
The sea has not been conquered. They have simply learned how to belong there.
